Each planet in Vedic astrology has one (or more) zodiac signs it rules. Sun, Moon, Rahu, Ketu, and trans-Saturnian planets own one zodiac sign each either independently or through co-rulership. Other planets own two zodiac signs each.
The table below illustrates:
Zodiac Sign | Ruling Planet(s) | Remarks |
Aries | Mars | Mars rules Aries & Scorpio; Sun is exalted here |
Taurus | Venus | Venus rules Taurus & Libra; Moon is exalted here |
Gemini | Mercury | Mercury rules Gemini & Virgo; Rahu is exalted here |
Cancer | Moon | Moon rules Cancer; Jupiter is exalted here |
Leo | Sun | Sun rules Leo; no exaltations here* |
Virgo | Mercury | Mercury rules Gemini & Virgo; Mercury is exalted here |
Libra | Venus | Venus rules Taurus & Libra; Saturn is exalted here |
Scorpio | Mars, Ketu, Pluto | Mars, Ketu, & Pluto co-rule Scorpio; no exaltations here* |
Sagittarius | Jupiter | Jupiter rules Sagittarius & Pisces; Ketu is exalted here |
Capricorn | Saturn | Saturn rules Capricorn & Aquarius; Mars is exalted here |
Aquarius | Saturn, Rahu, Uranus | Saturn, Rahu, & Uranus co-rule Aquarius; no exaltations here* |
Pisces | Jupiter, Neptune | Jupiter and Neptune co-rule Pisces; Venus is exalted here |
*Some astrologers suggest that Rahu and Ketu do not rule any zodiac signs; however, this is not correct. Rahu co-rules Aquarius alongside Saturn and Uranus both; this is identified by the fact that the Shatabhisha Nakshatra, which falls in the Aquarius zodiac sign, is Rahu’s own nakshatra. Similarly, Scorpio is Ketu’s own zodiac sign. Similarly, trans-Saturnian planets co-rule one zodiac sign each; Neptune co-rules Pisces alongside Jupiter, Uranus co-rules Aquarius alongside Saturn and Rahu, and Pluto co-rules Scorpio alongside Mars and Ketu. Those rules make sense when one considers the qualities of the planets. For example, Mars, Ketu, and Pluto are known to drive sudden changes which are caused by massive spiritual energy fluctuations in one’s life, so it is a given that they would be co-rulers of the same zodiac sign (Scorpio). Some astrologers may choose to ignore the co-rulership, but from what I have seen, that results in incomplete or sometimes even erroneous predictions.
Note: Much like planets, their respective zodiac signs too can be friendly, neutral, or enemy. If in the horoscope or astrological chart of a person, a planet is placed in an enemy sign, it tends to be somewhat weaker versus when it is placed in its own sign (where it’s second-strongest, only second to exaltation) or in a friendly sign (where it can operate at 70% to 80% power if not more) or a neutral sign (where it can operate at 60% to 70% power).
