Effects of the Sun in the Fourth House (Matri Bhava or House of the Mother)

Reading Time: 2 minutes

In the fourth house, the Sun when well-placed indicates a sense of authority of the native in the domestic matters. He/she would be consulted by the family members regarding the day-to-day decisions, although the native’s ego and prideful nature can result in arguments and fights sometimes between the members. The native’s mother likely holds a strong sense of dominance in the family. The father, on the other hand, may not have as much say in the family.

The Sun’s placement in the fourth house also means that the person’s sense of self-esteem and satisfaction comes from their household peace and environment. With that said, unless afflicted, the Sun can enable a person to live comfortably in a large or spacious residence replete with all the benefits and luxuries. However, the native would be the one handling the responsibilities of the household as well.

In this placement, the Sun lacks directional strength, so its native may achieve success and comfort after their 20s have passed.

If afflicted, the Sun here would cause issues between family members due to ego and the native would be overly sensitive and somewhat selfish in that they would prioritize their own image in the family rather more so than the comfort and convenience of their family members. The native’s mother would still be the dominant figure in the family but the relationships could be strained between the native and his/her mother.

Some conditions to remember here are:

  1. If the lord of the 4th house is well-placed – the benefic effects of the Sun will be even more prominent; however, if the 4th house lord is not well-placed in the chart, then the malefic effects of Sun (arguments due to ego, fights, etc.) will become more prominent
  2. Sun in exaltation (Aries) – if the Sun is in exaltation in the 4th house, the native will enjoy wealth and material pleasures as well as a long life, but may have ego clashes with the mother; they may have decent contacts with the government unless their ego comes in the way in which case things can go south. However, the native will enjoy pleasures and material comforts for certain.
  3. Sun in own sign (Leo) – if the Sun is placed in its own sign, Leo, in the 4th house, then the person will enjoy overall comforts and this placement is deemed to be even better than Sun’s exaltation in the 4th house as the only caveat that the person is expected to suffer is that they will get little to no help from their father but they will nonetheless have strong contacts with the government.
  4. Sun aspected by a benefic – the family environment is very happy and well-maintained with overall very good relations of the native with their mother, though some weakness may be noticeable in the case of the father’s relation but not as much. When aspected by Jupiter or Venus, the comfort and luxuries of the domestic life provided by Sun are increased manifold.
  5. Sun conjunct benefic – the good effects are increased even further as the ones mentioned above and the ill-effects are minimized. If Venus aspects or conjuncts Sun in the 4th house (given that it is not combusted), the person would spend heavily in maintaining their domestic comforts and pleasures but would like a palatial life regardless.
