In the chart, the 1st House, 4th House, 7th House, and 10th House constitute the angular houses and are undeniably the most significant part of the kundali or horoscope.

  1. 1st House (also known as Ascendant House) – governs the person himself/herself, longevity, appearance, skin complexion, height, body structure, overall life, dignity, mentality.
  2. 4th House – governs domestic happiness, residence, domestic environment, vehicles, houses, fields, farms, orchards, ancestral property, mother’s health, relations with mother.
  3. 7th House – governs marriage, marital life, nature of spouse, appearance of spouse, conjugal life, sexual relations within the ambit or scope of marriage, business partnerships, reputation in foreign countries
  4. 10th House – governs honor, dignity, public image, name and fame in society, authority and power, recognition for hard work, ambition, permanency in service, promotion at the workplace, government favors, or being benefited from the government, last rites to one’s parents, responsibilities, overall career.

Benefic planets, including Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, and Jupiter, do well in Kendra Bhava or Angular houses. Any malefic planet like Mars, Saturn, Rahu (North Node), and Ketu (South Node) would still bring benefits, but they would not be the most optimal placements for the houses.

Angular houses form the center of the horoscope chart; therefore, their effects are the most powerful. Any benefic planet if placed well in an angular house will give immensely beneficial effects, even if they are aspected by a malefic planet.

For example, for a Virgo ascendant (first house is Virgo zodiac sign) has Mercury placed in the ascendant house, then it becomes one of the most powerful placements in the entire chart.

Similarly, if Jupiter is placed in a friendly sign or even neutral sign in an angular house (1st, 4th, 7th, or 10th house of the horoscope), then it can help vastly improve the overall horoscope, even if other planets may not be as well-placed.

However, if a malefic planet such as Saturn or Mars is placed in one of the angular houses, the results may not be as desirable. For example, unless Saturn is exalted in the first house (which only happens for Libra ascendants, since Saturn is exalted in Libra), the person may suffer from various diseases. Similarly, if Rahu is positioned in the first house, the person may not remain disease-free.

*Note that unless placed in its exaltation sign or own sign or Mooltrikona, a malefic planet in the angular house will almost always give negative results.
