The 7th house of the ascendant (Lagna) chart governs marriage, marital relationship with spouse, sexual pleasures with spouse, conjugal happiness, divorce, partnerships, marital love, honour and reputation in partnerships, societal reputation, business in foreign countries.
Since the 7th house is one of the Kendra Bhava or Angular Houses in the Kundali or ascendant chart of the native, it plays an important role in the life of the native.
The 7th house is inherently benefic and therefore Mercury here will perform excellently well even if it is placed without any other benefic conjunction or aspect.
If Mercury is well-placed in the 7th house, then the native will either have an early marriage and/or they will obtain a spouse who is younger than them. In such a situation, the person’s spouse will also exhibit characteristics which are akin to Mercury, meaning that he/she will be intelligent and also have the charm of a young boy or girl. Such an individual will have a spouse who is well-learned and enjoys gaining new knowledge.
However, the sexual desires of the spouse may or may not be far too much because they will be more interested in intellectual pursuits as opposed to sexual things. This will, however, be fixed if Mercury is in exaltation in the 7th house, or under the aspect of a benefic such as Jupiter, Venus, or the Moon. With that said, the person will have a faithful and loving wife/husband if Mercury remains unafflicted in the 7th house.

Some considerations to note here are:
- Mercury in exaltation (Virgo) – this is applicable to Pisces ascendants; if the person has Mercury in exaltation in the 7th house, they will get excellent sexual pleasures from their partner or spouse as well as their spouse will be quite beautiful (due to Mercury’s youthful features); the individual will also enjoy a good occupation and gain much after marriage. It is important that Mercury does not get afflicted here because if that happens, one or more of the planet’s benefic effects will be affected, too.
- Mercury in His own sign (Gemini) – all the benefits of Mercury being in exaltation are provided here as well; in fact, the placement is even better than Mercury in exaltation because it also gives the individual a good father-in-law and provides more family pleasures and happiness, too. It can be seen here that Mercury in Gemini provides more domestic oriented happiness such as more pleasures and happiness from the spouse and their family while Mercury in Virgo provides more profession-oriented happiness and career-based successes.
- Mercury in debilitation (Pisces) – Mercury being debilitated in Pisces in the 7th house will cause the individual to worry much about their partnerships or marriage; the spouse of such an individual may suffer health issues and there may be issues relating to the sexual happiness or satisfaction between them. Additionally, the individual may have to face various kinds of worries after marriage due to the marriage being afflicted by a debilitated Mercury. Note that any benefic aspects on Mercury will lessen the negative effects of the planet considerably.
- Mercury Rahu conjunction – if this happens in Gemini, then the person is lucky because Mercury Rahu conjunction in Gemini will give the person an extraordinarily beautiful spouse in marriage, and not just that, they will grow by leaps and bounds after marriage. Such an individual would also be quite smart in their partnerships and also have the necessary cunning needed to extract the most benefits from any situation. The spouse of the native may however suffer health issues, but if Mercury is strong enough or if the conjunction is aspected by a benefic, then those can be handled with ease. Overall, this is a very good placement in the 7th house for any zodiac sign where both Rahu and Mercury can perform well.
- Mercury Ketu conjunction – in the 7th house, Mercury Ketu conjunction or Ketu Mercury conjunction will function well for only a select few zodiac signs, with Sagittarius being one of them. In other cases, the person will likely be detached from their spouse or vice versa and if Mercury is also poorly placed, then the person will suffer overthinking and worries as a result of detachment in their marriage. Ketu is inherently inimical to marriage unless both people are spiritual and the marriage would be a union between them to further each other in the spiritual side. However, this conjunction works wonders for Gemini ascendants, because Mercury Ketu conjunction in Sagittarius will give the individual the best of both worlds, including a happy married life as well as the sexual pleasures that arise as a result of the same.
